BAGSMART carry on sets work well for travelers going on long trips who value luggage that’s organized and easy to access in a pinch. I never had a front-opening carry on before, and this set was fabulous for not having to flip the bag over flat to access packing cubes.

What is the BAGSMART Light Wanderer Kit?

The BAGSMART Light Wanderer Kit carry on set is comprised of the Gateway 20” rolling carry on and a Blast backpack. Either one could be a solid option for a quick trip. The set saves money on buying both.

It doesn’t include the pro version of the Blast or the front-open version of the Gateway carry on. The set works great, but you can get a few extra features in Bagsmart’s separate options.

With a good sale, the price difference between separate luggage and the kit should be less than $50. With separates, you can also choose to get the front opening carry on and a Blast backpack instead of the pro version.

My Review Experience — Unboxing

First, the unboxing the set experience was trouble free. The carry-on bag was in a box that the Blast pro backpack was plastic wrapped onto. I carefully cut off the wrapping.

Next, I opened up the main compartments of both the backpack and luggage. I also bought a set of six packing cubes. I filled the larger compression bags with clothing. I was able to stuff them a bit more by filling them before zipping up the compression zipper. It almost has the same effect as when people used to sit on their suitcases to close them.

Two larger compression bags fit in the main area on one side of the rolling carry on. Then I was able to fit two smaller bags on the side with the front opening, which is a great for putting things like toiletries such as a toothbrush and toothpaste for a refresh before landing, allergy medication, comfort items for the flight, or tampons.

The backpack holds about two medium to large compression bags and a drawstring bag for shoes. I prefer to put my shoes in this bag because the soft shell keeps my shoes from being squashed.

The set worked great as carry ons. The wheels run smoothly and the backpack sits well on top. When I checked luggage, it got fairly dirty. I’d recommend using the bags mainly as carry ons.

Who is this product for:

  • You’re very organized, or atleast want to be.
  • You don’t check luggage, no matter what the length of the trip is.
  • You like the front opening of the carry-on bag.

Who shouldn’t buy this product

  • You need a larger, checked bag instead.
  • You prefer a bag with a zipoff bag for your laptop.
  • You prefer carrying a duffle bag to a

Where to purchase: The bagsmart website.

Pros

  • Everything is expandable and has compression elements.
  • One pack of 6 compression cubes (purchased separately) is enough for both suitcases.
  • The backpack opening from the front opens to an undivided area, making it easy to pack two to three packing cubes.

Cons

  • You will have to create your own set if you want the front opening carry on.
  • The top pocket’s zipper on the backpack unzips when picking it up by the handle. I would also be careful putting items in it if you check your backpack.
  • The carry on doesn’t have a cup holder.

In My Expert Opinion

I received the full make-your-own set as a product review from Bagsmart. I’ve reviewed products of all kinds for twenty years, and it doesn’t impact my feelings about a product.

The Blast Pro backpack and front-loading Getaway carry-on served me well traveling. They’re both easy to transport and fit everything I needed. However if you want features such as a cup holder on a suitcase or smartphone stand, this may not be the right set for you.

You also will want a Blast Pro backpack if you are a digital nomad, like me, who is traveling a lot. The material is stronger and it also has a RFID-blocking pocket.

Daily Life with the Light Wanderer Kit

Since I’m traveling with my mini schnauzer I need a set that’s both lightweight and the wheels work well. Managing both him and luggage can be alot. I regret when I checked the luggage, because it did get dirty. If choosing light colors, definitely carry on your luggage as much as possible. It may feel like a good idea to check luggage when offered for free at the gate, but don’t do it. The top backpack zipper did open when I grabbed it by the top handle, so I would make sure to only pick it up by the straps. I really liked how the backpack expands, which helped me to carry everything needed on a year-long trip.
